Wedding Music FAQS
Are there any restrictions about the kind of music I can have at my wedding?
Some churches may restrict you from using certain selections. These can range pretty widely, depending on the officiant's preference. Please check with the music minister, priest, rabbi, or other appropriate church representative. Also, don't forget to consult your families!
PLEASE NOTE: Be sure to check with your church music director or parish administrator about their policies for hiring outside musicians. Please be aware that you may be responsible for what is commonly known as a "bench fee" should you decide not to employ the regular church organist for your wedding.
What defines "sacred" vs. "secular" music?
Sacred music is music written and used for religious purposes. It includes hymns, mass settings, and some classical music.
Secular music is, basically, everything else: pop songs, most other classical music. There is now a somewhat hybrid category that combines religious texts with pop/rock song style, known as contemporary Christian.
Is secular music appropriate for my wedding?
Sacred music is music written and used for religious purposes. It includes hymns, mass settings, and some classical music.
It can be. But it depends on whether the church has any restrictions about that. There are some that won't even allow the Wagner Bridal Chorus (the traditional "Here comes the bride" music) because of its secular origin in an opera. Be sure that you've asked the appropriate church representative to get a clear definition of what is or is not allowed. (Consider also whether the style of the music is something that you'll be comfortable hearing on your wedding video in 15 years!)
Could you suggest music for my wedding?
Of course! We would be happy to set up a consultation with you to discuss specifics and/or musical needs of your wedding. The consultation is included in the price for playing your wedding. Otherwise, a consultation fee would be applicable.
Could you also provide music for the reception?
Yes, an additional fee would apply.
Could you provide a list of music you play?
We can provide a representative list of music to give you an idea of what we have to offer. After a consultation, selections you've chosen can be emailed to you and to others upon request.
How much music can I have for my wedding?
As much as you want! There are many opportunities for music within the ceremony. As a general guide, music you want may fit into the following categories:
- I. Prelude music
- II. Seating of family members before the service
- III. Processional
- A. Bridesmaids/Groomsmen
- B. Bride
- IV. Service music
- A. Congregational hymns
- B. Liturgical music
- 1. Psalms
- 2. Communion
- V. Special music
- A. Unity candle
- B. Tributes
- 1. Ave Marias
- 2. Family memorials
- 3. The Lord's Prayer
- C. Music after vows
- VI. Recessional
Why would I choose live music over a DJ or recording?
Live music is more personal and can really make your event special.
If I have a themed wedding, could you provide music related to my theme?
A lot would depend on the theme, but yes, probably. For instance, a water theme might use Handel's Water Music, "Over the Rainbow," "Auf dem Wasser zu singen," The Swan, etc.
What instruments do you provide?
We are a flute and piano duo. We are able to refer other musicians (trumpet, strings, etc.) upon request.
What if my wedding is outdoors?
The flute is susceptible to moisture and extremes of climate and if we are bringing a keyboard with electrical cords, the playing area needs to be protected from the elements, (i.e., rain), by way of a tent or covered space.
What if there's no piano at my venue?
We would bring an electric keyboard with amplification to such an event, for an additional fee.
What time should I expect you to arrive before my wedding?
Typically we begin prelude music 20-30 minutes before the scheduled start time of the ceremony, while guests are arriving. We will get there in plenty of time to set up before beginning to play.
Would you be willing to play an instrumental version of a particular popular song?
With enough notice (at least two weeks), if you bring us the sheet music, we will play it. (For example: "Remember When" - Alan Jackson)
Can I use more than one type of music?
Absolutely. A variety of music can be appropriate to reflect your personal style or theme and add to the overall mood of your wedding. (Please see the first question above.)
